The Iranian Vice President for Science and Technology, Dr Sorena Sattari has inaugurated the Virology Research Laboratory at the IASBS Science & Technology Park in a one-day visit to Zanjaan Province. The Vice President and his team visited the Modern Sciences Technology Incubator of the IASBS Science & Technology Park on Tuesday 29 September 2020 opening the Virology Research Lab.
The IASBS Science & Technology Park’s newly added Virology Research Lab is to become one of the important academic centres in the country. It consists of a Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS) Lab, a Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) Lab, a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Lab to look into the genetics of viruses, and a Proteomics Lab. This research laboratory can play an important role in accelerating the advancement of science if sufficient budget and support are given to it.
The Virology Research Lab has been established under the direct support of the President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences and has a great potential to be transformed into an important centre in the country to make scientific and technological advances in the frontiers of science.
Given the prominence of the Covid-19 pandemic and the universal presence of the influenza virus, the Virology Research Lab at the IASBS can play a significant role in research into these viruses. Equipping this laboratory with more required facilities and allocating the necessary budget and support to it can turn this Lab into one of the prominent virology centres of the country in the coming months.
Vice President Sattari concluded his visit by looking at the latest technological achievements of the science and technology based units residing at the Science & Technology Park. Dr Sattari also had a tour of the Park’s land parcels to be allocated to companies and technology units and the ongoing landscape construction activities.
