The second day of the month of Ordibehesht (22 April) each year coincides with World Earth Day. When we think of a clean Earth, the image of clear and pure water, a blue and untainted sky, and green and fertile soil immediately forms in our minds. It is a beautiful image, but not a lasting one. The reason for the impermanence of this image is, without doubt, not the Earth. The Earth, this blue planet, has always opened its generous hands to all and has caused the rain of divine mercy to descend, in justice, upon the heads of the great and the small, the old and the young, the rich and the poor, so that the servants of God may learn to share goodness among themselves. The Earth granted us greenery, trees, and dense forests so that we might benefit from its blessings without ingratitude. The Earth has revolved around the Sun so that, with the passage of days, we may realise the passing of life and make good use of its brief moments.
Although most people have not understood all these lessons and at times, out of selfishness and self-interest, and at other times out of ignorance, have attacked the Earth and other human beings, there have nevertheless been those who have behaved with knowledge and fairness towards the Earth and its inhabitants.
Clean Earth Day is a day for reflecting on the Earth and on people of pure spirit, those with green thoughts, from the gardener who cultivates flowers to the master who nurtures students.
And in the green quiet of the university, at a time when, because of the hardships of the day, the place of students in the university’s garden is empty, it is fitting to remember with gratitude the founder of this great garden, all the lecturers who provided us with the opportunity to reflect on a clean Earth, all the thoughtful students who created a green space in their place of study, and finally all the hardworking hands who planted trees, greenery, and lawns in this house of knowledge. Wherever you are, may your heads be green and your hearts flourishing.
