The IASBS President and former Secretary-General of the UNESCO National Commission in Iran, Prof Sadollah Nasiri Gheydari, has emphasised the fundamental role of education, science, and culture in the progress of societies, describing teachers and educators as the guiding lights of society and the primary pillars of the country’s sustainable development.

Speaking at a gathering of heads and experts of literacy in the fourteen districts of Zanjan Province held on the occasion of International Literacy Day, Prof Nasiri Gheydari expressed his appreciation for the efforts of those active in the field of literacy. He stated: “The ability to produce science, provide education, and create culture is among the most beautiful manifestations of creation and is a valuable characteristic of human beings.”

Referring to the formation of international institutions such as UNESCO following the Second World War, he added: “The establishment of UNESCO reflects the historical understanding of humanity that the world cannot be managed through war and violence, and that achieving peace and sustainable development requires a reliance on education, science, and culture.”

Noting Iran’s position in international fora and UNESCO, the IASBS President described this standing as being influenced by the country’s rich civilisational and cultural heritage. He said: “In today’s world, the concept of literacy is no longer limited solely to the ability to read and write. Although basic literacy remains of fundamental importance, rapid scientific and technological developments necessitate simultaneous attention to various types of literacy, including digital literacy, skill acquisition, and emotional and educational literacy.”

He said: “In order for today’s society to be able to face issues effectively and manage life better, it requires a set of skills and capabilities, and the educational system can play an important role in creating and strengthening these capabilities.”

Emphasising the position of teachers and educators on the path to national progress, the former Secretary-General of the UNESCO National Commission in Iran clarified: “The mission of education and learning, which is also emphasised in religious teachings, rests today on the shoulders of teachers, faculty members, educators, and activists in the field of education and literacy.”

Highlighting the necessity of investment in education, Prof Nasiri Gheydari noted: “No country can traverse the path of excellence and sustainable development without relying on the lofty position of faculty members, teachers, and educators, and without investing in the field of education.”

Concluding his remarks by honouring the memory of enduring figures in the field of education and upbringing, including the late Mohammad Bahman-Beigi, he stated: “Empowering different segments of society, particularly in rural and underprivileged areas, and developing practical skills alongside basic education, is a valuable investment for the future of the country, which is being pursued through the efforts of the education sector and those involved in literacy.”
